What counts as one SMS

160 English or 70 Nepali characters

1 SMS = up to 160 English (GSM-7) characters, or up to 70 characters in Nepali/Unicode. Longer messages use more SMS: 153 or 67 characters per part.

One emoji or one Nepali letter switches the whole message to Unicode. Characters such as { } [ ] ~ \ | ^ € count as two in GSM-7. We never split a character across parts.

Template approval

Approved templates, better delivery

Every custom message uses a template approved by SMSRay before it can be sent. Codes sent through our OTP API use our built-in template, so OTP works on day one.

  • OTP on day one

Our built-in OTP template is already approved. Call the OTP API and your codes go out straight away.

  • Your own templates

Send us the wording of your alerts and receipts, with placeholders for the details that change. We aim to review them within one business day.

  • Why we review

Review stops spam and phishing before it is sent, which keeps delivery healthy for every sender on SMSRay.

Never counted

  • One-time codes that sign you in to the dashboard
  • Messages that fail after every automatic retry, credited back in full
  • Replays of a request with the same Idempotency-Key (kept 24 h)
  • Requests rejected before sending, such as a number in a country we don't deliver to yet

Counted

  • Undelivered messages: they were sent, but the recipient's phone never confirmed
  • Messages you send from the dashboard, including tests to your own number
  • Extra SMS from a long message or Unicode text: check segments in each response

Pricing FAQ

Questions about plans

How much does SMSRay cost?
Starter is NPR 3,000 per month for 4,500 SMS (about NPR 0.67 per SMS). Business is NPR 5,000 per month for 10,000 SMS (NPR 0.50 per SMS). Enterprise is priced for your volume: contact us.
What counts as one SMS?
One SMS is up to 160 English (GSM-7) characters, or up to 70 characters in Nepali or other Unicode text. Longer messages are split into parts of 153 or 67 characters, and each part uses one SMS. One emoji or Nepali letter makes the whole message Unicode. A message can be at most 6 parts, and every API response tells you the segments it used.
What happens to SMS I don't use?
Unused SMS expire at the end of each monthly period. Your plan's allowance starts fresh at the beginning of the next period.
What if I need more SMS in a month?
Top up at your plan's rate: NPR 0.67 per SMS on Starter and NPR 0.50 per SMS on Business. Top-ups are added to the current month and expire with it. If you regularly need more, Business or Enterprise will usually work out cheaper.
Why do messages need an approved template?
Every custom message uses a template approved by SMSRay before it can be sent. Review blocks spam and phishing before it reaches anyone, which protects deliverability for every sender, including you. We aim to review templates within one business day. Codes sent through our OTP API use our built-in template, so OTP works on day one.
Which message types are included?
Starter and Business include OTP and transactional SMS. Promotional SMS, with approved templates, is available on Enterprise.
Is a failed message counted?
No. If a message cannot be sent after our automatic retries, it ends as failed and its cost goes back to your balance. An undelivered message, one that was sent but never confirmed because the recipient's phone stayed off or the number is inactive, is counted because it was sent.
How do I sign up?
Accounts are created by the SMSRay team. Talk to sales, tell us about your use case and expected volume, and we'll set up your workspace and plan. You then sign in at app.smsray.com with a one-time code to your phone or email.
What happens when I run out?
New sends are rejected with 402 insufficient_balance until you top up or your next monthly period starts. Messages already accepted keep going. Check what's left any time in the dashboard or with GET /sms/balance.
